Ikeido has a way of writing these protagonists that you're DESPERATE to support and you hope they win against all their adversities no matter what, and the tension and suspense builds up so much you're like GODDDDDD. And then when the protagonist fails you're like NOOOOOOOOOOO and when they succeed against the corrupt assholes of the world you swear and shout and go YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS and it's a really emotional ordeal for me, honestly. This movie is going to kill me.

Plus it's the default foreign language taught in secondary schools here in the UK, so that helped. I also started learning Russian a couple of years back because ~~as you know from YET ANOTHER THREAD oh god~~ I love urbexing and I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to go and explore Pripyat, and I want to visit Russia because I want to visit places which are miserable or something. :|

It's compulsory at Secondary School, which I think would be the equivalent of your High School. There aren't that many French people in the UK that I know of, but France is one of the closest European countries to us, so maybe that's why? Also we have a history with the French being monarchy and nobility in Britain hundreds of years ago, so we use a lot of French words in English anyway ~~i am a language nerd sorry~~

Which book series was that? I've had a go at translating Dostoevsky from the original Russian and that was difficult but very fun! Also other Russian languages... well, there are a ton of languages around there which are similar but not quite the same (for example Ukrainian and Belarusian) as well as all the languages spoken by the countries which were absorbed into the USSR but are now independent again ~~I'm really interested in Russia for some reason and i could talk about it for hours, fucking shoot me~~

i love german words?? like i love how they're conceived, and i love how german just tacks a whole bunch of crap to words to make new words. it's so fucking FUN. but then i gave up on trying to learn it when they introduced gender because german word genders don't have any rules as to how you'd know whether to use the conjugation for male/female nouns and shit and so i was just like bye

The series was the Nightwatch series! :D It's fascinating, there're mages of Light and Dark, but they aren't necessarily good and evil. Light just means that you use your magic for altruistic reasons (which isn't even portrayed as a necessarily PURE good thing) and Dark means you use your magic for your own personal benefit (which isn't even portrayed as a necessarily bad thing either). It's great and I love it and I've wanted a Nightwatch AU for AGES. It's 'cause of Nightwatch that I started listening to Russian bands and stuff despite not understanding a LICK of what I'm hearing, it's just so good.

French is the same with the word genders. My main failing with French and German is that I can read it okay, but I'm not so good speaking or writing it as I can't remember the word genders and my grammar isn't so good ~~i love Russian because there is no word for 'the'~~

My sister went to University to study biosciences but realised she wasn't enjoying it so just went I'M GONNA LEARN MANDARIN CHINESE INStEAD LOL and went and got a degree in that instead. She's super-clever and shit and she's married with kids now whereas I'm the stupid child by comparison, let's just say Kazoku Game hit a nerve because I am Shigeyuki ~~seriously it's fine, I get on with her really well~~

I AM A HOARDER OF BOOKS. Do you have anything like charity shops/thrift stores there? Where people donate their unwanted stuff and you can buy it really cheap? I'm always picking up books, far more than I'll ever be able to read, because I just fucking love books so I stockpile them in case I get around to reading them one day and the Nightwatch series is one I thought I'd like. Put it this way, there's one second-hand bookshop I go to so often that the owner will go out to get his lunch and leave me in charge for five minutes because I'm such a regular customer, so...yeah.

Guh, my kind of underdoggy. I love the fact that Tomo seemed to like to take up these kind of roles. A failed musician (TYTD), unlucky in love detective (Unubore), unfunny yakuza (T&D) etc... They have their own failures and weaknesses. It made the characters more human.
